Duane Thompson is managing director of the Washington, D.C. office of the Financial Planning Association (“FPA®”), the largest organization in the United States representing financial planners. FPA has approximately 28,500 individual members. Its corporate office is based in Denver. He is responsible for overseeing FPA’s advocacy program, including government and media relations in Washington, D.C., and a national pro bono program.

Duane joined the Institute of Certified Financial Planners as director of government relations in 1995, which merged into FPA in 2000. He has 18 years of lobbying experience on the federal and state levels. In addition, he served as press secretary to former Congressman Michael Strang of Colorado, 1985-86; and as a news summary editor in the White House, Office of the Press Secretary, 1987-88. In 1995, Duane was elected as a Colorado delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business representing a family recycling business.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of JumpStart, a national coalition of organizations dedicated to improving the financial literacy for students, and is active in historic preservation issues in Kensington, Maryland, where he resides. Duane has a Master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and a Bachelor of Arts in history and studio art from Principia College, Elsah, Illinois.
